How we work with two traditions

What we will not ask you to choose

Two people bring two families, two calendars and sometimes two faiths into one home. In our room, none of them has to lose.

  • Your faith or your partner's

We do not rank traditions or ask either of you to give one up. We ask what each practice means to you and how you want it to look at home.

  • Your family or your partner

Parents and in-laws matter in many families. We talk with the two of you about them, and a family member joins a session only if you both ask.

  • Your first language or the shared one

Sessions are in English or in Spanish. If a feeling is easier to say the way you first learned it, say it that way.

  • Your way of arguing or theirs

Some families raise their voices and make up; others go quiet for days. Neither style is wrong. We help you find what works between the two of you.

Services

Two ways to begin

Both are offered in person in Carmel, or by video from anywhere in Indiana.

Two clinicians, English and Spanish

Sessions are in English or in Spanish. Andres sees couples in both languages; Sanaa sees couples in English. If you need another language, we will help you find a colleague.

How it starts

From a first message to a first session

  • 01

    You write or call

Tell us which times suit both of you and which language you would like. You do not need to say more.

  • 02

    We reply

Within one business day we say who has an opening and in which language.

  • 03

    A written estimate

If you pay without insurance, we send the good faith estimate before the first session.

  • 04

    The first session

Eighty minutes with both of you, to get to know each other and to see whether we fit.

How fees work

The answers to what nearly every couple asks before a first session.

  • Insurance we work with

Alcove is out of network with every insurance plan, so we do not bill your plan: you pay for each session yourselves. We do not take Medicare or Medicaid. Couples therapy is often not covered unless one partner has a diagnosis, and we do not diagnose a relationship. If you want a clinician who bills your plan, we will gladly give you the names of colleagues.

    • Out of network with insurance plans

    • No Medicare or Medicaid

  • If you pay yourself

You pay at the end of each session by card, including HSA and FSA cards. What sets your fee is the length of the session and which clinician you see, and your fee is given to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and the kind of session, to send to a plan that may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it pays anything; ask it before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written good faith estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We send one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

We do not check benefits, because we do not bill your plan. If you want to know whether your plan reimburses, call it before the first session and ask about out-of-network mental health services for couples.

Questions

What couples ask us first

Do you take my insurance?

Alcove is out of network with every plan and does not bill insurance. We do not take Medicare or Medicaid. We give you an itemized receipt each month that you can send to your plan, and your plan decides whether it reimburses anything.

What is a superbill and how do I use it?

It is an itemized receipt with the dates and kind of each session and a diagnosis code. You send it to your insurer to ask for reimbursement for out-of-network care. Reimbursement is not guaranteed, and the diagnosis code is visible to your insurer.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We send one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

How much does a session cost and how do fees work?

What sets your fee is the length of the session and which clinician you see, and your fee is given to you in writing before you start. You pay at the end of each session. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one.

Can we use an HSA or FSA card?

Yes. Most HSA and FSA cards work like any other card at the end of a session. Your plan's rules decide what it covers; ask it if you are unsure.

What happens in the first session?

Both of you come for 80 minutes. We explain how we work, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, and each of you says what you hope for. There is no homework and no decision to make that day.
